PSA: an otome game is not defined by how much romantic content it has
It is not ‘false advertising’, nor is the game a ‘failure’ if an otome game has more story or character driven content than romance. So long as it’s labeled as 女性向け, and has a female character as the narrative protagonist that drives the story, then it is an otome game. Believing otherwise is narrow-minded and takes 50 steps backwards to the stereotype that otome games are only all about ~*fluffy romance*~ or hooking up, getting married and having kids like a harlequin novel’s romance. You are not helping the genre grow any more diverse if you keep sticking to this belief and complaining to a developer or discouraging them from stepping out of the ‘frame’ and trying new things if you tell them that their game ‘fails’ or is ‘false advertising’ or that they ‘shouldn’t label their game as an otome game’ when there is more story content than romance. So please. Stop.
I agree with this completely. An otome game is simply a visual novel that has a female protagonist, and is made for a female audience. I also certainly don’t think there’s anything wrong with fluffy romance games, but it is important to realize there’s more to the genre than that.

”Like any young girl fresh from graduation, Lynn dreams of making a name for herself. Of what she makes a name for was something she hasn’t seriously considered. Did it really matter? Three months later, Lynn isn’t too sure she likes the path the fates are planning for her. In debt and jobless isn’t really her first choice in the list of things she wanted to be. Maybe setting off on her own with no special training, education, experience, or plan was not one of her best ideas. With the threat of eviction looming over her, Lynn must find a way to quickly make ends meet or face facts and go home. If only her sour luck would work in her favor for once. If past experience was anything to go by, Lynn isn’t too keen on the idea of how things might turn out.”
